Maybe the Best Bowl Game Ever

boisestate.jpgWhen’s the last time you saw a team win a bowl game off of a hook and lateral play? That’s precisely what Boise State did in their victory over the University of Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Even though Boise State came into this game with no losses, they were still considered to be the underdog as they matched up with the reigning Big 12 champion. Nevertheless, Boise State proved that they can play with the “big dogs” and win (which just goes to show that the current BCS system needs to be trashed in favor of a playoff system).

I’m a sucker for the underdog, so of course I was pulling for Boise State in this one. But I have another reason for pulling for Boise State. They belong to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and that is the conference of my alma mater. What can I say? A rising tide lifts all boats, and our boat definitely needs some lifting.

If you missed the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, you missed one of the best college football games of all time. Keep your eyes out for the highlight reels tomorrow because this game was one for the books.

“… a game unlike any college football has ever witnessed” – Pat Forde (ESPN)

“… one of best games in college football history” – Arash Markazi (Sports Illustrated)

I would like to point out one thing to all of the “playoff” proponents out there. The BCS got it right….again. USC spanked the cry-baby Wolverines! Boise State outplayed their abilities to beat the sorriest excuse for a Big 12 Champion I have ever seen. To think they could play that well over a 3-4 week playoff system would be delusion.

One of the best games ever, but let us not forget last year’s epic Texas-USC matchup. There we had three 3 exciting top draft picks, two undefeated teams, and the national championship wrapped up in one bowl game. Oh, and it was an amazing game, like last night’s, with a finish just as exciting if not as unexpected.

As for the playoffs, football remains the only NCAA sport [read: amateur competition] with an arbitrary “Championship”. Follow the money… [read: professional]

I would like to say that i have watched a few games in my short life, being from the south and being surrounded by championship teams in my younger years and playing with many of the guys that are now playing in the college ranks, this game was amazing! I would say this is one for the history books, yes, the Texas USC game was great as well, but the probabilities that you saw dashed against the rocks in this game can never be matched. Do you actually know the likeability of a hook and ladder working? and on 4th and 18!? i mean really, and then to keep following it by trick play after trick play, seriously, that game was the best!

Here are some great quotes about the proposal:

“I’m sure it probably wouldn’t have been as romantic if we would have lost,” Zabransky said.

“When you think of Ian Johnson proposing to his girlfriend, you’ve got to think of the weirdest circumstance that he could possible do it,” Tadman said. “I think this was it.”
