Is civil marriage for gay couples good for society?

There is a debate coming next week that you won’t want to miss. Doug Wilson will face Andrew Sullivan to answer the question, “Is civil marriage for gay couples good for society?” Sullivan will argue that it is, and Wilson will argue that it is not. Peter Hitchens will moderate. The debate will take place in the University of Idaho SUB Ballroom at 7:30pm on Wednesday, February 27th.

So…if I am to trust that little video, I can only come to one honest conclusion…

Peter Hitchens is Al Michaels twin brother.

    Clearly.

It occurs to me they’re asking the wrong question. At least, if the point of answering the question is to determine whether same-sex marriage should be allowed. The more appropriate question would be, “Is same-sex marriage bad for society relative to a baseline in which same-sex relationships are both legal and largely socially acceptable.”

If the answer to that question is “No” then the government has no compelling interest in limiting spousal rights and obligations solely to heterosexual couples.

Since when is Doug Wilson concerned about society? He is an arch-Conservative who rejects collectivism. He should be arguing about whether or not gay marriage is good for individuals, but then he would have to justify why as a champion of individual rights, he is advocating denying rights to certain individuals based upon their sexual identity. I can see why he would want to avoid doing this as it makes him a hypocrite.
