Fired for Refusing to Let a Man Dress in Women’s Dressing Room

The department store Macy’s fired an employee who refused to let a man dress in a female dressing room. The employee, Natalie Johnson, watched the man enter the dressing room, so she told him that he needed to go the men’s dressing room. The man explained to her that he was transgender—which means that even though he is biologically male, he feels himself to be a woman. She was not budging and told him he could not dress on the female side. Macy’s subsequently fired Natalie Johnson.

Asked whether she would handle the situation the same way if given another chance, Natalie said this:

“There are no transgenders in the world. A guy can dress up as a woman all he wants. That’s still not going to make you a woman. If you’re a man going into the women’s fitting room, I will kindly escort you to the men’s fitting room.”

@Nathan Meh, she’s entitled to whatever opinion she wants.

In this particular case, why should she take the man at his word. He could be some random man just trying to get into the woman’s dressing room by claiming to be transgendered. Perhaps before just marching in, he should’ve broached the topic with the store management to ensure his actions weren’t misinterpreted or resulted in an embarrassing confrontation with the employee.

I suppose they can change the dressing rooms to say “Biologically Male / Female” instead of Men’s and Women’s to clarify. : P

She shouldn’t have bothered claiming it is a religious belief; that will be dismissed out of hand.

What she needs to do is just stick with the facts. A person’s opinion of themselves does not dictate what they are. The guy is a man. Even if he has surgery to mutilate his external appearance, he will always be a man.

The rights for the modesty of straight women and their comfort should be given some consideration by Macy’s. I would be very uncomfortable trying on clothes while a person who is biologically male was doing the same thing in the next stall. The absurdity of Macy’s position is unfathomable. I commend Natalie; she handled the situation with finesse and the poise of a lady. Now that I know Macy’s decision on this issue, I don’t believe I will ever need to go into their stores again….especially not to try on clothes. If I were already in a dressing room and several gender-confused males walked in, my shopping day would certainly be ruined. Since our culture is in left field on this issue, perhaps stores should start providing 3 different fitting room areas. How sad that a young student should be backed into a corner on an issue that should never have come up. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created man; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.” (Gen. 1:27-28a) A believer in the Word of God would, of course, immediately take Natalie’s position when challenged as she was.

This is the second ridiculous dust-up I’ve seen in a week’s time over transgendered males.

Here’s my take on it (and I’m the local liberal):

If you’ve got male parts, you use the male restroom. You use the male fitting rooms. If it’s that big of a deal to you, get the sexual reassignment surgery. Can’t afford it? Not the problem of everyone else around you. Even if the science is starting to look like it’s coming down on the side of a gay gene and that there might be actual physiological stuff behind why people are transgendered, at the end of the day, you have to play nice in the sandbox. And that means if you can pee standing up, you do so. And if that’s the case, then you also have to use the poorly appointed changing rooms.

Why is nobody talking about the fact that Macy’s installed signs on the doors indicating the gender that could use the room? All she was doing was enforcing the policies that Macy’s had stated clearly. If there had been no signs, this would be a different story.
