Culture War at the Movies

Christopher Benson notes at the First Things blog that the culture wars have entered the American cinema. Below are four trailers of new movies covering the topics of same-sex “marriage,” Darwinism, and evangelical scandal. Besides being expressions of the current culture war, there is something else that these movies have in common. It appears that all of them come down on the side of the secular left on each of these issues. This is not surprising for Hollywood, but it is nevertheless a sign of the times (1 Chronicles 12:32).

The Kids Are All Right (2010)

This movie depicts a family consisting of two lesbian mothers who are “married” and their children. The film also deals with ethical questions related to reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization. Note the title of the movie. It’s not “alright” but “all right.” I presume the message is that the children of same-sex couples conceived through in vitro fertilization are “all right,” as opposed to being illegitimate. [Please be advised that this trailer has some offensive material in it.]

8: The Mormon Proposition (2010)

Creation (2010)

The Trials of Ted Haggard (2009)

One Response to Culture War at the Movies

Forgive me for being harsh, but have you been out to lunch for the past six or seven decades? American films have always dealth with cultural issues in either an explicit or implicit manner. This is nothing new and if it’s a shock to anyone, it only reveals how out of touch they are.
