Today is the opening weekend of college football, and it has been a battle of the Davids vs. the Goliaths. Every year in the first week of NCAA football, the power-conference teams square off against puny-conference teams so that the power-conference teams can have a warm-up game before their season really begins. And every year, one or more power-conference teams learn that puny-conference teams are not coming out to play a warm-up game. They are playing for keeps.

Nastia Liukin Returns to Dallas
This one is for all the die-hard Olympic fans. My wife took our two daughters to see Nastia Liukin’s return to Dallas from Beijing on Thursday. There was a big crowd at the DFW airport, but my wife was nevertheless able to snap a pretty decent shot (see below). The Dallas Morning News has a story on Liukin’s reception. There is also a video of her remarks.

Wimbledon 2008: One for the Ages
If you missed the 2008 Wimbledon final, you missed one for the ages. Roger Federer came into this match as the Tiger Woods of tennis. Rafael Nadal came in as the number one contender—someone who’s been spoiling for this fight for a long time. The match went longer than any other final in the history of Wimbledon—4 hours and 48 minutes (it broke the record set by McEnroe Bjorn Borg in 1980). But that wasn’t the only record set. Nadal became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win Wimbledon and the French Open in the same season. Nadal won it 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7. My commentary…

Kansas vs. Memphis: Did you pick it?
The big game is tonight, and I have to say that I think this may be the best I’ve ever done in filling out an NCAA Tournament bracket. I picked 9 of the “Sweet Sixteen,” 6 of the “Elite Eight,” 4 of the “Final Four,” and both of the teams in the championship game. Going into tonight’s game, I have 130 points for the picks I’ve made. If Kansas wins, I will finish with 162 points (scoring details). If you have bracket stats to share (especially if you have bested my picks), then post up your bracket score in the comments section. I want to see it. If you are…

Obligatory Superbowl Post
I have one word to describe the Giants’ victory over the Pats. Un-stinking-believable! How did the Giants win? You might say that the Giants’ defense neutralized Tom Brady’s offense. Or you might say it like Emmet Smith did in ESPN’s postgame analysis: “That defense got after Tom Brady’s behind today.” They really did. Tom Brady hasn’t been hit that hard and that often in any other game of this season. As a result, the Pats never got into an offensive rhythm, and they were completely shut out of the first and third quarters. The Giants scored fewer points than any other game they played this season. Ray Van Neste makes…

Watching the Super Bowl to the Glory of God
C. J. Mahaney has written some instructions about how to watch the Super Bowl to the glory of God, and I have copied them below. His remarks in this regard comprise but a portion of a larger essay titled “Thoughts on Super Bowl XLII.” Except for his intolerably heterodox disdain for the Dallas Cowboys, the rest of the essay is well worth the read.

Sore Winner?
Can you believe I’m still basking in the glory of LSU’s victory over Ohio State? A friend sent this “motivational poster” to me via e-mail. I know this is poor form, but it’s too funny not to pass along to fellow fans. [Sorry T.J.!] [Here’s the big poster version.]

LSU Wins the Championship (Sweet!)
LSU took it to Ohio State tonight. It was a great ending to a tough, injury-ridden season. Now that it’s all said and done and we are all basking in our moment of victory, a few thoughts. [audio:https://www.dennyburk.com/Music/LSU-Fight-Song.mp3]

How the Tigers Got to the Championship
The big game is tomorrow, and I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to see LSU put a shellacking on Ohio State. The road to this championship was less than orthodox for the Tigers, and ESPN’s Pat Forde describes the drama this way.
