Mike Frantz is an elder with me at Kenwood Baptist Church, and he’s a student at Southern Seminary. Mike has also served as a fireman in our fair city for the last twelve years. He’s a devoted follower of Christ and a close friend. Yesteday morning, Mike and two of his fellow firefighters had a really close call with a fire at an apartment complex. Monica Markin was on her third floor balcony screaming when Mike and his partners arrived. Mike’s partners climbed the ladder first to rescue the woman, and Mike was about 20 seconds behind them. When the first two men reached the top, a fireball engulfed the…

Bob Costas’ Interview with Jerry Sandusky
[Watch full interview here] Bob Costas has a hard-hitting interview with alleged pedophile Jerry Sandusky. The video above is a small portion of the interview in which Sandusky admits showering with boys but denies any inappropriate contact. Because of the explicit nature of the conversation between Costas and Sandusky, I decided not to embed the full interview in this space. If you want to see the entire interview, you can watch it here. The interview was broadcast earlier this evening on NBC’s “Rock Center.” There are lots of reasons to doubt the truthfulness of Sandusky’s denial, but the most telling one comes near the end of the full interview when…

Amazing Video of Earth from International Space Station
The video above is a compilation of images taken with a low-light camera by the crew of expeditions 28 and 29 onboard the international space station from August to October 2011. I am not sure who put this compilation together, but the original videos are available at NASA’s website.

Remembering Dick Winters, American Hero
When I think about the definition of leadership, heroism, and bravery, I think about Dick Winters. He was the best of men. I noted earlier this year when he passed away at age 92, but I missed this excellent article about him that came out on Veteran’s Day. I am glad to read it a couple of days late and thought you might want to see it too. Here’s an excerpt:

Tony Dungy Comments on Penn State Scandal
Tony Dungy comments on the scandal at Penn State: I believe the University had no other choice in this matter than to accept his resignation or force him to step down. I think they made the right move in ousting the President of the University as well. When something of this magnitude happens I think everyone in a leadership position is responsible… I also think this is a reminder to all of us that we have a responsibility to hold each other accountable, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if it is a subordinate, a co-worker or your boss. If something is taking place that is wrong, we have to…

Joe Paterno’s Firing Was Necessary and Right
Joe Paterno’s immediate firing was a sad, difficult decision on the part of Penn State’s board of trustees. And it was also the right decision. Children were horribly abused, and those with the power and moral authority to stop it sat on their hands.

The Scandal at Penn State
Michael Tomasky‘s piece in The Daily Beast about the scandal at Penn State is devastating. The crimes perpetrated were horrific. The failure to report the crimes was unconscionable. This article is hard to read, but it’s an unflinching look at the ugliness of it all. Read it here. Albert Mohler discussed the scandal yesterday on “The Briefing” and drew out a lesson for Christians. Listen to it below. Harold Camping Repents of False Teaching?
The Christian Post has a headline reading, “Family Radio Founder Harold Camping Repents, Apologizes for False Teachings.” I just read a transcript of Camping’s remarks, but I did not see any repentance there. The closest thing appears in the second to last paragraph of Camping’s statement, but the words are kind of muddled. In any case, it doesn’t sound “repentant” of the repeated false predictions that Camping has made. In Camping’s own words: Incidentally, I have been told that I said back in May that people who did not believe that May 21 should not be the rapture date, probably had not been saved. I should not have said that,…
