Fired for Refusing to Let a Man Dress in Women’s Dressing Room

The department store Macy’s fired an employee who refused to let a man dress in a female dressing room. The employee, Natalie Johnson, watched the man enter the dressing room, so she told him that he needed to go the men’s dressing room. The man explained to her that he was transgender—which means that even though he is biologically male, he feels himself to be a woman. She was not budging and told him he could not dress on the female side. Macy’s subsequently fired Natalie Johnson. Asked whether she would handle the situation the same way if given another chance, Natalie said this: “There are no transgenders in the…

Was This Teen Mom Wrong to Kill an Intruder?

There are some stories that you hear that you know you’ll never forget. This is one of them. Sarah McKinley is 18 years old and the mother of an 18 month old baby boy. Her husband died of cancer on Christmas Day, and a couple days later she buried him. On New Year’s Eve, she was home alone with her baby boy when two men came to her door and began knocking. Sarah grabbed…

    Top 10 YouTubes of 2011

It’s time for my annual posting of the Top 10 YouTube Videos of the Year (see last year’s list here). This ranking is totally unscientific. Only one person was polled to compile this list—yours truly. This year’s crop contains items relating to sports, theology, news, Christianity, and more. Some of the videos are humorous, and others are poignant. If you think I’ve left something out, let me know. I’ll think about adding it to the “Honorable Mention” category. This year’s slate of videos is arranged in no particular order, as number ten is obviously in a class all by itself. If you’re interested, here are links to lists from previous…

    Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011)

I was sad to hear about the passing of Christopher Hitchens last night. He was a unique public intellectual with a rapier wit and an even sharper pen. He seemed to be able to hold forth on almost any topic put before him, and he was as charismatic as they come. Hitchens always fascinated me not merely because of his intellect and prose, but also because of his independence. He was a liberal, but he didn’t always follow the liberal script. He was a darling of the left, yet he remained a firm supporter of the Iraq War. He was an avowed atheist, yet he insisted on the superior literary…
