The Washington Post has a feature length article on Rick Santorum’s Catholic faith and, in particular, on his connection to the lay-renewal group called Opus Dei. I kept waiting for a reference to The Da Vinci Code, but thankfully it never came. Instead, the article tells the story of a man who began as a nominal Catholic but who has become committed to a conservative, Catholic position: Continue Reading →

Nicholas Kristof Affirms “Kony 2012”
I appreciate Nicholas Kristof’s take on the Kony 2012 phenome. He answers a lot of the questions that have been raised by critics of The Invisible Children group. He also includes affirmations of the video from former Secretary of State Madeline Albright. This is an important Op-Ed to consider in your evaluation of Kony 2012. He writes,
The video doesn’t contain errors, but it does simplify things greatly to hold attention. Complexity is, er, complicated: It has been a leading excuse for inaction during atrocities — during the Armenian genocide, during the Holocaust, during Rwanda, during the Bosnian slaughter. Each episode truly was complicated, but, in retrospect, we let nuance paralyze us…
The bottom line is: A young man devotes nine years of his life to fight murder, rape and mutilation, he produces a video that goes viral and galvanizes mostly young Americans to show concern for needy villagers abroad — and he’s vilified?

Encyclopaedia Britannica Goes Out of Print
After 244 years, Encyclopaedia Britannica is now going out of print. This is not at all surprising, given the ubiquity of the internet. Nevertheless, it still feels a bit like a landmark, doesn’t it? The New York Times reports:
In the 1950s, having the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the bookshelf was akin to a station wagon in the garage or a black-and-white Zenith in the den, a possession coveted for its usefulness and as a goalpost for an aspirational middle class. Buying a set was often a financial stretch, and many families had to pay for it in monthly installments. Continue Reading →

Two Stories Exposing the Bankruptcy of Pro-Choice Logic
Two stories recently in the news have exposed the absolute moral bankruptcy of pro-choice thinking. Both of them illustrate the fact that pro-choice logic leads not just to the devaluing of unborn human life but to that of newborn human life as well. Continue Reading →

Kids of Lesbians More Likely To Be Gay
The Baptist Press reports on some recent studies about children of lesbian parents. The bottom line is this:
The research shows that 64 percent of children raised in lesbian households consider having homosexual relationships, compared to 17 percent raised by heterosexual parents. Continue Reading →

Measuring “Kony 2012” Viral Impact
Just a side note here about how “Kony 2012″ measures up to other viral videos. As of this writing, the YouTube version has received over 76 million views. But the Visible Measures group says total views across the internet is over 112 million. How does that measure up to other viral sensations like “Charlie Bit My Finger Again” or Rebecca Black’s “Friday”? It took only six days for “Kony 2012″ to become the fastest “campaign” to surpass 100 million views. In short, it’s the fastest growing viral video campaign in history. The stats are below. Piers Morgan Goes at Guests on the Gay Marriage Issue
If you are to appear on the Piers Morgan program, there is no need to be surprised or unprepared for the gay marriage questions. If he views you as a Christian, the questions will come whether you want them to or not. Whether or not it has anything to do with the reason you’re on the program, he’s going to ask, and he’s going to do it in such a way that casts you personally in a negative light. Clearly this is an important issue to him, and he wants to discredit anyone who believes what the Bible says about human sexuality. He’s done it over and over again (see videos below).
Morgan has done this so many times that some patterns are emerging. So here is a short list of questions to be prepared for: Continue Reading →

Intolerant Gay Activists Target Chick-fil-a
Tolerance for Christian teaching continues to wear really thin in some areas of our country. World magazine reports that activists have now set their sights on Chick-fil-a. Why? Because Chick-fil-a’s charitable foundation gives to groups like Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which these activists deem to be anti-gay. Here’s the report from World:
Last week, the student senate at Northeastern University, in Boston, voted to end negotiations to bring fast-food chain Chick-fil-A to campus after students protested over the company’s affiliation with several Christian organizations the students say have an “anti-gay” agenda. Continue Reading →

Kony 2012 Creator Jason Russell on “Today Show”
Jason Russell appeared on “The Today Show” this morning to talk about his viral video “Kony 2012.” There wasn’t time for a full response to criticism of his group “The Invisible Children,” but a full response is posted here. Matt Chandler posted an endorsement of the organization yesterday saying that it is a “godsend to the region.”

Do you know who Joseph Kony is?
If you don’t know who Joseph Kony is by now, then it’s likely that you don’t own a computer. He’s a brutal warlord in Africa who kidnaps children and conscripts them into his “Lord’s Resistance Army” (LRA). His tactics are unspeakably vicious and brutal, and he’s been at it for over 20 years. The man is a monster, and he needs to be stopped. I have written twice before on this blog about Kony, once in 2005 and again in 2008. Here’s what Christianity Today wrote about him in 2005: Continue Reading →
