Pray for Steven Curtis Chapman and Family

From The Tennessean: Steven Curtis Chapman’s youngest child died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a car driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the family’s Williamson County home. Maria, one of the Christian singer’s six children, was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Hospital, which confirmed the death, according to Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The 5-year-old was hit by an SUV driven by her teenage brother, she said. Police did not give the driver’s name. The teen was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser down the driveway of the rural home at about 5:30 p.m. and several children were playing in the area, McPherson…

    What is Christian Music?

Brent Thomas has some interesting reflections on the question “What is Christian music?” He writes: ‘We must understand that we have created our own sub-culture which runs by its own rules. Just because something may be purchased at a Christian bookstore does not mean it may be trusted. Conversely, just because something may not be purchased at the same store does not mean the people behind it are not glorifying God in what they do. These issues are not new to anyone involved in “Christian” music or books at any level. However, we must be sensitive to the fact that many well-meaning believers are sincerely swayed by labeling, and the…

    “New Kids” Reunite

When I was in the 11th grade, a group of my friends convinced me that somebody’s uncle knew somebody that was able to get “The New Kids on the Block” to perform at our prom. They were persistent and convincing (I thought), and I’m sad to say that I was just gullible enough to believe that it was true.

High School Musical (please forgive frivolous post)

This is a frivolous post. But I’m doing it anyway. Is there anyone out there willing to admit that they are fans of “High School Musical”? Granted, the basketball “players” look like they can hardly even dribble, much less actually play basketball [Note to central casting: Next time you need to cast a realistic looking basketball player, try not to hire a Justin Guarini look-alike]. Talking about this movie is a capitulation to a cheesy pop culture phenomenon. But I’m still wondering who will fess up to making plans to watch “High School Musical 2” tonight? “To answer your question, it’s even better than the first one.” –Los Angeles Times…

Steve Hayes Reviews New Caedmon’s Call Album

I’ve been talking a lot about Caedmon’s Call lately, and I’m happy to report that my good friend Steve Hayes has already listened to and reviewed their new album “Overdressed.” Steve has the inside track on all things Caedmon’s (I’m sorry, Steve, for outing you when you shared the first album back in ’96), so this is likely the first review you’ll read. One thing’s for sure. I can’t wait to buy “Overdressed.” I’ll probably write about it here when I do. In the meantime, go check out Steve’s review. “‘Overdressed’ Dresses up Nicely (A review of the new Caedmon’s Call release)” – Steve Hayes (Cajun Roast Beef)

How the Prayer of Jabez Killed Caedmon’s Call

I just finished listening to a fascinating interview with Derek Webb in which he gives some of the reasons for the break-up of Caedmon’s Call (listen below). Believe it or not, Derek says that Bruce Wilkinson and The Prayer of Jabez were in part to blame for the band’s demise! https://web.archive.org/web/20111209221431/http://podcasts.buzzplant.com/derekwebb/DW-Podcast_Episode12.mp3 Derek explains that his first solo album was inspired by an encounter that Caedmon’s Call had with Bruce Wilkinson at a trade event. At this event, Wilkinson was supposed to speak for about 20-30 minutes, and then Caedmon’s was to perform a few songs when he finished. Wilkinson held forth for about an hour and a half telling the…

Derek Webb Reunites with Caedmon’s Call

I think Caedmon’s Call lost big time when Derek Webb left the band in 2003. Even though the band went on without him, for many fans, it was as if the band had broken up. Caedmon’s Call 1.0 gave way to Caedmon’s call 2.0, and it marked the end of an era of great music. So I’ll bet I’m not the only one who’s happy to hear that Derek is reuniting with the band. Here’s what Cliff Young said in a recent press-release:
