Are Mormons Christian?

Dr. R. Albert Mohler finishes up his debate with Orson Scott Card over whether Mormons are Christians or not. Mohler’s last essay has words that relate to our earlier discussion about “the Great Tradtion.” Here’s how his summarizes his view that Mormons are in fact not Christian:

“The debate has never been about whether Mormons are good Americans or would make good neighbors. . . The debate is not over Mitt Romney or his right to run for President of the United States. . . The debate is not over the right of Mormons to hold their faith, promote their faith, and spread their faith. . . Here is the bottom line. As an Evangelical Christian – a Christian who holds to the “traditional Christian orthodoxy” of the Church – I do not believe that Mormonism leads to salvation. To the contrary, I believe that it is a false gospel that, however sincere and kind its adherents may be, leads to eternal death rather than to eternal life.

“Indeed, I believe that Mormonism is a prime example of what the Apostle Paul warned the Church to reject – “a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you” [Galatians 1:8-9].

“And thus I must end where I began. Mormonism is not just another form of Christianity – it is incompatible with “traditional Christian orthodoxy.”

Although I would probably agree I realize it’s not always so cut and dry as to what it is about Mormonism that makes it unorthodox, and how much change there needs to be to consider them within Christianity. Surprisingly there are a lot of similarities that should probably be noted. I heard an interesting discussion/debate on these issue from Roanoke College called “Gerald McDermott and Robert Millet, a public conversation on “The Mormon Jesus.””

It was really interesting and informative. Here’s the link:

I would argue otherwise, Christianity and Mormonism are nothing alike with the exception of vocabulary. The issue comes in the redefining of those terms so that both a Mormon and a Christian can say “Jesus is both God and Man,” but mean entirely different things.

Mohler says it well: “Here is the bottom line. As an Evangelical Christian – a Christian who holds to the “traditional Christian orthodoxy” of the Church – I do not believe that Mormonism leads to salvation. To the contrary, I believe that it is a false gospel that, however sincere and kind its adherents may be, leads to eternal death rather than to eternal life.”

Mormonism teaches something very different and damning than historic Christianity. They are heretics!
