A Dagger Deep in the Heart of Texas

The Cardinals drove a knife deep in the heart of Texas last night. This one’s gonna hurt for a while. Congratulations to the Cardinals. They played like champions.

I’m a life-long Cardinal fan. I had given up on my team in August. It was a lot of fun for us to watch them come back and play like the team I knew they could be.

Having said all that, I couldn’t help but feel bad for Texas. Even my boys did. They are a classy ball club.

It was a superb World Series; especially game 6. I felt for Ron Washington. I love this guy; and Josh Hamilton; and Nolan Ryan.
Remember the good old day when St. Louie had the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Cardinals: Baseball & Football. And I think Augie Busch owned both teams.

    Have a great Lord’s Day!

Gussie Busch did not own the St. Louis Football Cardinals. Bill Bidwell did and now his son own’s them. The Big Red (as the football team was fondly called when they were in St. Louis) originally were the Chicago Cardinals until 1960 when they moved to St. Louis. Bill Bidwell, one of the cheapest and worst owners the NFL ever saw, moved them to Phoenix when the city refused to build him a new stadium in the late 1980s.

If Gussie had owned the team, they would have stayed.

I’m hoping the rangers can sign pujols or fielder to play 1st and then add sabathia and make another run next year. game 6 still hurts to think about…not sure how long it will take to get over that:(

Congrats to the Cards, but I just can’t stop thinking about this series (even though the Rangers aren’t my #1 team!). The Cards are a classy group, and you don’t get much classier than LaRussa or Pujols. However, this was their 11th World Series championship. The Rangers, although they’ve been a team for only 50 years, have 0 world championships. There just comes a time when you root against a team no matter how classy they are simply for the fact that they’ve been there too much and you want to see someone else win it all. This was definitely one of those times. It just doesn’t seem “fair” for some reason. It’s why everyone hates the Yankees, and the Cardinals to me are becoming the Yankees of the national league. I hope the Rangers have a good off-season. They need a top of the rotation starter and it would be awesome to see them get Prince Fielder. The fans are going to have to back them up if they go out & get guys like this though. You can only go out & sign big free agents when fans come to games & buy your gear since this is what increases the payroll. It’s good to see DFW becoming more baseball-oriented & not just being about the Cowboys, but a championship would have made it so much better. Last year everyone was just glad that they got there & wasn’t devastated by the loss, but this year it hurts & is incredibly disappointing.

I was hoping the Rangers would win , but knew that after failing to end it in game 6 , the Cards would take it . The only thing that made no sense to me was why the outfield wasn’t playing deeper to prevent a double or triple when the Cards tied it up the first time. Bad field management. Then not pitching to Pujol’s . My thought has always been in a spot like that , let the best beat you and you walk away with your head held high. Hats off to the Cards in game 7 but game 6 I thought the Rangers self imploded with miss managed decisions .

    September 9, 2011 – NPR’s Robert Siegel:

“There are eight playoff races in Major League Baseball every year, the six divisions and the two wildcard spots. And this year, all but one of those races [AL West, which the Texas Rangers won] is pretty much resolved already.”

“I guess a dearth of pennant races really can’t be all that good for baseball.”

“this might be a predictable and uneventful September on the field”

    And this gem:

“… earlier in the season, we talked about the possibility of adding another playoff team.” – i.e. since we already know the winners, we need to do something to make this thing more exciting.

He was talking about the fact that all the division winners AND the wild card winners were already known with a whole month of baseball left. The (eventual) World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals were not one of those teams.

Add game 7 to Ranger’s kamikaze run and you have the reasons for how they let that ring slipped through their fingers. Walking Freese and loaded the bases was the mistake of the beginning of the end. I almost turned the TV off when they made that call.
